Need I introduce the Gonset Communicator II? I have a pair of these (with the CD stickers still on them) and am, currently, refurbishing them for myself and my XYL. This radio was designed for both the Amateur Radio service as well as Civil Defense work. It can operate on 120 VAC or 6 VDC for mobile work. To think that I once passed up the chance to buy a complete set of these (2 radios and amplifier), all in CD yellow, for $75. But, back then, nobody was buying this old junk!
